This trip uses our 1-10 overall difficulty scale (technical + fitness + exposure + environment). How this scale works
HIGHLIGHTS
Highlights
- Starting at Passo del Tonale, with lift access to the Presena area.
- A route that combines an uphill approach with a long off-piste descent.
- Pisgana and Pisganino as different possibilities, not interchangeable runs.
- Return arrangements agreed for the valley where the descent finishes.
OVERVIEW
About this trip
Pisgana and Pisganino are long mountain descents, where the approach is an important part of the day. We start from Passo del Tonale and use the Presena lifts to gain height before continuing towards the chosen route.
Pisganino generally involves a shorter approach on skins, while Pisgana requires a longer approach across glaciated terrain. In both cases, this is much more than skiing a few runs close to the pistes: you need to be comfortable skiing off-piste in changing snow conditions and spending several hours in the mountains with a backpack.
The upper slopes and the terrain lower down can offer very different skiing conditions within the same descent. Being able to ski with control and adapt as the snow changes is more important here than skiing fast.
We discuss the intended route beforehand, but make the final decision based on snow and avalanche conditions, glacier conditions, lift operations and the experience of the group. If neither of the classic descents is suitable, we look at other options in the area.
The return to Passo del Tonale depends on where the descent finishes and may involve a short transfer.
ITINERARY
Itinerary
-
Day 1From Presena to the valley
We meet at Passo del Tonale, check the equipment and use the lifts to gain height. From there, the day can develop in very different ways depending on the conditions and the group.
Some descents start almost directly from the lift system, while others involve a short walk or a section on skins. We might spend the day skiing several freeride lines around Tonale and Presena, or choose a longer itinerary that takes us further into the Adamello.
Routes such as Sgualdrina or Cantiere offer more direct freeride skiing, while Pisgana and Pisganino involve a longer journey through high-mountain and glaciated terrain before the main descent.
We decide the exact plan according to the snow, avalanche conditions, visibility, lift operations and the experience of the group. We go through the route together before setting off and can adapt the day if conditions change.
